The “Dumping Ground” aka My Husband’s Office

The other day, I wrote here about the “Elephant in the Room” and decluttering.  Well, I am happy to report that this past weekend my husband’s office and closet aka “the dumping ground” got “Kondofied”. Yep…I happily checked this room off my list of spaces to organize.

According to master organizer, Marie Kondo (author of The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up) one is supposed to tidy by “category”.  The reality? We were having carpet cleaners come and I didn’t have the time to do that;)  I  had to get stuff off the floor and get it D-O-N-E!  However, all the things that were taken out were  moved to their correct “home” or donated.

I didn’t take a “before” shot because it verged on hoarder proportions!  I am very honest on my blog, but I simply forgot and honestly my husband is always in there.  You don’t need a visual, just trust me it was BAD;)

This space is a work horse and is my husband’s primary office when he is not traveling.  It isn’t the nicest design-wise, per se, but it is clean and he can now walk around without tripping over “stuff”.  I guess you can say function over form is more important to him. He doesn’t need it to be “pretty” just comfortable and able to work efficiently.  So disregard any piles or his papers stuffed in cubbies etc. It is his space and I’m not going to mess with it.  I just wanted you to get the idea of what I was talking about;)

My husband has quite a few degrees etc. that were on the floor collecting dust.  He worked very hard for these, so why the heck were they sitting on the floor collecting dust?  I was design-paralyzed not knowing how to arrange them etc.  I just couldn’t figure it out.  Once I cleared the floor and space it all came to me. Bingo! In the midst of clutter I didn’t have a plan…I just knew I wanted to give those degrees some respect;) After the clutter? The plan came to me in no time at all! Hmmmm….so I bit the bullet and just “winged” it. I may or may not re-arrange them, but for now they are hung properly and have the respect they deserve!  Who knows how much longer they would have leaned up against the wall if I didn’t tackle it right then and there.  The lesson here? I could not think clear enough to hang simple pictures in a messy space.  Clear those spaces people….the creativity and inspiration will come!

The industrial looking file cabinet had to stay (at least it is black;).  I simply added a floor lamp, a gold sphere and some boxes from Target to corral his envelopes and stationery and now it looks so much more pulled together!  Sometimes you just have to stop thinking so much and “do it”…right? Now that area looks kind of good if I do say so myself;)

I always feel a space needs some kind of living plant and this one is easy to care for and has a lot of visual impact.  I have a water globe in it, so my husband doesn’t have to worry about it…he has more important things to worry about in his day!

The picture is a sketch of my husband’s college campus and has sentimental meaning.  Again, it was leaning on the floor in a closet!  Now he can glance over and enjoy memories of this special time in his life.   As you can see, I didn’t even bother to “style” the Ikea cubbies.  Remember, this is his territory…but I may just organize the books a bit;)

There you have it!  A clean, uncluttered, efficient, meaningful work space for my husband.  I guess I just wanted to document that I am getting it done around here;)  Little by little, room by room…. I also want you to see that just pulling a space together with meaningful things you already have and a few decor items is a win personally and professionally in this case;)

My husband has already commented on how his office seems bigger and brighter which makes him feel more productive!  I guess there is something to simplifying, editing and decluttering spaces;)  Genius I tell you;)!

I hope I have inspired you to tackle your “dumping ground”.  Or at least get those degrees, meaningful pictures etc. off your floor and hung;)!   Too much thinking about it and fear of “messing up” can be so unproductive, am I right? Remember fear is a liar!

It’s funny…once you start decluttering it’s contagious!  It is so cathartic and truly addictive!  What are you waiting for?  Go and conquer that space that has been bothering you.  I can promise you will feel so much better:) I know I do:)

Have a great weekend!

I m doing better than this than ever before. I think it helps to move to a new home and begin new habits. BUT, why is it that the breakfast table always seems to be the place that collects whoknowswhats? I ve got to figure out the why so we can break the habit.

Thanks for your comments and congrats on your success Cliff:) ! I’m getting there! Yes, we have a space like that as well… In our house it’s the kitchen bar/island;) I think everyone can relate to to having one “whoknowswhats” space😉
